Coastin' Solo: An Interview with Weesho
Every music release is a journey filled with ups, downs, and winding roads. Trying to manage through the tempest that is new music can be crippling for even the most seasoned musicians. Wilmington native, Weesho (Julio Triado), knows the ever changing landscape of the music industry all too well. After being in a number of bands he’s finally set sail on his latest solo adventure under the moniker Weesho. We sat down with him to discuss his new independence, forthcoming debut EP, and latest single “COASTIN’”.
How did you get your start in music?
Mom recorded a few R&B songs with WYclef back in the early 2000's and my grandfather was in a huge salsa band in Puerto Rico back in the 70's. I think I truly had a natural inclination to just create sounds and rhythm all the time. It was like having an itch that needed to be scratched. But when I was introduced to Guitar Hero back in 09', that inspired me to pick up a guitar for sure.
I've always been fascinated with beats and sounds since I can remember. So combining that with a natural urge to want to always create things, I think I was destined to be an artist of some sort. My first performance was at The Queen (main stage) for an event held by Gable Music Ventures ironically enough! It was there where I met Jeremy and Gayle. We've all been supporters of each other since!
What is this new song about?
This song captures one's journey through our beautiful country, while capturing the attention and experiences of different personalities and energies.
What inspired the solo project?
After dedicating great amounts of hard work, musical expression, and experience on two different musical groups, I think I realized that my greatest fulfillment that I truly experience musically is satisfied when I'm creating music by my lonesome. I think I like telling my own story. I feel the most creative when I can express myself through each instrument, so to have access to that control and limitless possibilities brings my entire life full circle for me.
What has been the biggest challenge about being a music creator and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge as a music creator for me personally was figuring out where and how to dedicate my efforts and talents. But I overcame that by experimenting with writing on my own. I wrote a theme song single for the "Doobie Diaries Podcast", and it was received rather well. I told myself "you got this" when I experienced that reception
What can people expect from you in the near future?
In the very near future, I'll be releasing my debut single and eventual record titled "Straight Up", and hopefully I'll be following that up with a few mini tours along the East Coast and possible local shows for the "A1 Day 1's" in the Philly/Delaware area!
