Music Review: "Blacked Out" by The Side Chicks Feat. Honeychile
The Side Chicks are a neo-soul band based out of Philadelphia who made their Wilmington debut in 2023. Although they have yet to announce any return dates to The First State, they do have some new music out for anyone who can’t get over their saxophone-laced tunes. “Blacked Out”, featuring Philadelphia singer-songwriter and rapper Honeychile, is a groovy song dripping with the sensual promise of a new crush and packed with smart, flirty lyrics.

“You got me feeling like,
Oh my God so in love,
can’t get over you,
let me tour your mind,
feel you ride,
anything you want to do”
-Alexa Korogodsky
Released in November of 2023, “Blacked Out” begins with lead singer and guitar player Alexa Korogodsky proclaiming their deep affection and interest in someone who has caught their eye. Jazzy guitar chords are plucked in a mellow rhythm as she comes in hot and heavy. The rest of the band soon follows. Playful drums and keyboard make their entrance along with soaring vocal harmonies and continue to dance along the track.
Honeychile skats into the song, ready to lay it all on the line, as she opens up about her attraction and fear in this new and exciting feeling. The second chorus is followed by a pulsing guitar solo, then later, a sensual sax solo, as the drama between the vocalists and the subject rises and falls. Honeychile makes promises and sets boundaries in the last verse, giving listeners the thrill of taking a chance and shooting their shot.
“ You got your
Bell Hooks in me
And I’m all about loves redemptive qualities
Just trying to live a life with of more honesty….”
-Honeychile
The band was started in 2017 by Korogodsky and the band's saxophonist Staci Fink, and they keep a rotating cast of jazz and r&b players on stage and in the studio. “Blacked Out’ features the two originators as well as Jennette McSturdy on keyboard, Kyle Tither on bass, and Naomi Thompson on drums. The mix and master was done by Micheal Harmon at Studio Crash in Philadelphia.
