Music Review: Living In The Moment with Lexxie Mathis

Lexxie Mathis, a Delaware-born, New York-based bass player and composer, is celebrating the March release of their meditative ambient tune “Live In This Moment Forever”. Mathis has toured with Jared Mattson of the Mattson 2 for his Middle East Tour, and lends her bass skills as a session player in NYC for bands ranging from jazz-funk and indie, to rock. including her brother Ty Mathis. Her latest song is an introspective deep dive into the mind of an artist who is thoughtful, patient, and diverse.

“Live In This Moment Forever” is meditative and lulls the listener into a dream-like state with its groove and tempo. The song contains Mathis’ signature bass as well as neo soul-style drums, and atmospheric guitar. Mathis seems to be focused more on creating a landscape with minimal instruments and sound textures to engage listeners, rather than depending on the  popular verse hook format. Perfectly named, the song is quickly finished in less than two minutes, encouraging the listener to be present because the end is near. A refreshing take on what a song can be, Mathis is flexing their composer skills with this intentional track.

The music video for the “Live In This Moment Forever” features Mathis doing just that, as she strolls along a beach wind blowing in her long locks, a smile spreading across her face. You can follow Mathis online to keep up with their live performances and catch them streaming for their live URSA Live Cast Residency on May 1 at 7pm EST here.
