Album Review: Cinematic Sounds in “How Sweet You Are” by Samuel Nobles
Philadelphia-based, Delaware-born composer and performer, Samuel Nobles, is known to most as a bass player for some of the most popular bands in the area. He’s played alongside Olivia Rubini, currently contesting on NBC’s The Voice, Season 25, and Ladybug Music Festival Alumni Lunar Year to name a few. He has credits on dozens of albums and has composed music for several films and television shows like the IFC feature film Greener Grass. On February 23, Nobles released an impressive 14-song piano album charmingly titled, How Sweet You Are, to all streaming platforms.
How Sweet You Are is a melodic masterpiece and real treat for anyone fond of cinematic music. Although there is one instrument present in the tracks, the tape recorder effects and perfectly placed reverb makes certain that tracks like “Wash Out” provide textures, to switch moods and add color. The field recording in the beginning of ‘Bullfrogs” transports you to a warm summer evening on a lakefront property, the title track “How Sweet You Are” sends you back out into the world to romanticize your life, as the last track closes by ringing out warm and true.
The entire album was recorded by Nobles on his prized muted upright piano in his row home in Philadelphia and mastered by Taylor Deupree. Nobles lets us into his creative mind as we traverse moments of love andcompassion, and we find ourselves grounded by the end.
